If you're tired of the message that amputees need to be running marathons or public speaking to be seen in the world, you're not alone. You don't need the perfect Instagram life to live a wonderful, successful life with an acquired disability. I'm Amanda or One Footed Phoenix.

Before Everything Changed

In 2018, life was good. I was enjoying serving as a full-time missionary with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I also just finished a semester of school at BYU- Idaho on campus before setting out to serve a teaching mission. I loved campus life! I made friends with some awesome roommates and thrived in an environment that accepted my learning disabilities and encouraged me to learn to the best of my ability. It prepared me to be away from home for what would be a longer period, an eighteen-month full-time dedication to sharing my beliefs. I knew it wasn't going to be easy for me, having been diagnosed previously with ADHD and dyslexia. I also found out at sixteen that I have a specific learning disability in mathematics and one in processing as well.

I had things against me from day one of wanting to serve a mission, but I also had a very determined spirit about me. I did get flagged in my mission paperwork and was required to do extra interviews because of some mental health factors. Thankfully, I was able to clear those, and I was approved to continue trying to serve, but I was also told I needed to stay in the United States due to difficulty trying to get my ADHD medications outside my home country.

The Accident That Changed My Life Forever

About two months into the eighteen months of serving a mission, I was hit on my left side by a distracted driver. I was riding my bike with my companion behind me to have dinner with church members in the area. My left ankle was smashed between my bike frame and the front of the car that hit me. I was able to wiggle my way free, but the accident left me with nerve damage in my ankle that I didn’t know was there until two months after being sent home early.
